Patriotic Program

July 4, 2008

The annual Patriotic Program takes place again this year at Millennium Plaza, on the west side of the entrance to Washington Park, at the Franklin Street bridge.

Beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4, members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2536, American Legion John Franklin Miller Post 37, American Legion Skwiat Post 451, and the Disabled American Veterans Post 23 will participate posting colors, and the VFW Post honor guard will fire a 21-gun salute, according to event chairman Justine Venice. The Indiana State Prison honor guard also has been invited.

Mayor Chuck Oberlie will present Michigan City Patriotic Medals to local residents who have served in the defense of the homeland since September 11, 2001.

Ted Yagelski will lead the prayer; Jon Venice, commander of VFW Post 2536 will speak; and Randy Miller and the Exchange Club glee club will sing patriotic songs.

The Michigan City High School Junior ROTC color guard also will present the colors, led by Marty Pluchinsky. Special guests will include U.S. Coast Guard Chief Boatswain’s Mate James Ellison, The Wall Gang, Rolling Prairie VFW Post 2493 Commander Richard Mrozinski, Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer, State Sen. Jim Arnold, U.S. Representative Joe Donnelly and county Veterans Service Officer John Wantuch.
